Take it off your chest...
Read Rules

I went to my parents' bathroom and I saw broken glass on the sink. Next thing I know I'm slicing the palm of my hand with it. Blood everywhere. The thing is though, I'm not sducidal or anything. It was almost like…an instinct? It's like I was in some kind of zone and I didn't even realize what I was doing until it was over. I'm really scared. I've never self harmed or been in any kind of depression. Is this normal? (14 year old girl)

  • Hi! That's definitely not normal. If you instinctively grab a piece of glass and harm yourself with it then something subconsciously must be calling you to do so. It could be that a lot of people in your surroundings do self harm and you just saw the glass and did it as well, as in your subconscious mind it seemed like a socially normal thing to do. Some also start this way to get rid of other kinds of pain (you do not have to be depressed in order to be in pain, and that's all it takes sometimes). Whatever it is, you will have to protect yourself from this. First by finding out why you did this, and then you can take steps to build a mental barrier so it won't happen again. There are professionals who can help you with this. If you feel like you can't tell your parents, you can still try to get help through school or your doctor. A professional has to keep everything you say confidential, so you don't have to worry that your secrets will be out in the open. I think it's important that you seek some help with this, as you should obviously prevent this from happening again and things going seriously wrong, and you need to be able to put butter on a sandwich without being in complete fear of the knife you're using.
