Are there rules to poetry, and when i write poetry how do I know if it classifies as poetry or not
Overall, no. But specific types of poetry have different guidelines, like how haiku follow the 5-7-5 format for syllables per line, or how limericks have a specific rhyme structure. Free verse can just kind of be whatever and doesn't even have to rhyme. If there's one rule for poetry, it's probably don't write a descriptive paragraph and then call it a poem; at least separate it into lines and try to have some sort of rhythm or flow to it.
